Success Stories

What is the GLA:D ™ program?

GLA:D ™ is a standardized group exercise and education program designed for people living with hip or knee osteoarthritis. It was originally created in Denmark and is now being made available in Canada due to its success. The GLA:D™ program has been shown to reduce participants’ symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve their overall quality of life. Evidence suggests that participating in GLA:D ™ may delay the need for joint replacement surgery, reduce pain and use of pain medication, and increase physical activity levels.

GLA:D ™ Canada

According to clinical guidelines, all individuals with symptoms of osteoarthritis should receive education and exercise as first-line management. GLA:D ™ Canada aims to implement evidence- based guidelines into practice by combining education and exercise into a structured program.

We are excited to offer the GLA:D ™ Canada program here at Cambridge Physiotherapy & Rehab Centre.

Structure of the Program

  1. Initial physiotherapy assessment to determine if you are a good fit for the GLA:D
    1. This assessment is done by a registered physiotherapist with a GLA:D ™ Canada certification
  2. Two 90-minute education sessions to learn more about osteoarthritis
  3. 12 group exercise sessions delivered by a GLA:D ™ Canada certified physiotherapist
    1. Sessions are 60 min and are offered 2x/week for six weeks
    2. All sessions are mandatory

Data Collection

To ensure the program is running as effectively as possible, GLA:D ™ Canada will be collecting data about your symptoms and function at three time-points: your first visit, 3-months, and 12-months after starting the program. This data is valuable for quality improvement, supporting decision-making about GLA:D ™ at a policy level, and allowing for further investment into GLA:D™ Canada.
