It can be scary to even think of going back to exercising after your pain has finally gone away. Sometimes we guard ourselves from anything strenuous because of fear of hurting ourselves again. But is this the best way to avoid injuries?
But the good news is it’s up to you to change that. By taking your health seriously and exercising regularly you can avoid injuries and prevent old injuries from coming back. Here are some great ways to start your fitness journey.
Don’t Start Too Fast
If you haven’t been working out for years and you decide one day you’ll do an 8km run, of course your body won’t react well. Ease yourself into your workouts and help your body to adapt! One way of doing this is by starting with beginner workouts at a local gym, or low Impact activities such as walking and biking. As you start to feel recharged by workouts, your body will respond positively to more difficult activities, and you will learn to crave that feeling.
Find Something you Enjoy
People that maintain that active lifestyle for years are not that way by chance. The ones who stick with a healthy lifestyle are the ones who have learned to love what they do. So, a big part of sticking with your new exercise routine is finding something you enjoy. Do you like being motivated in a bootcamp class? Or do you enjoy swimming? Or maybe a run with a friend? Find out what works for you and continue to add fun new workouts to your regime. The important thing here is to always challenge your different muscle groups, not just abs, or legs, or arms.
Make Yourself Accountable
It’s so easy to make a good excuse about how tired you are after a long workday, or that it’s been a long week and you just don’t have time. But the first step to changing your lifestyle is making it a priority and showing others it’s your priority too. Sign up for group classes or book a time to meet your friend for that run. These are all great ways to keep yourself accountable and make sure that you stick with it even on the hard days, because you know you’ll be happy you did.
