Move With Confidence. Live Without Limits!
GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program in Cambridge
Hip and knee osteoarthritis can quietly reshape how you live. Movements that once felt automatic may now require effort, hesitation, or even avoidance. Over time, this can limit your independence and reduce your overall activity level. At Cambridge Physiotherapy & Rehab Center, the GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program is designed to help you take back control through a structured and evidence-based approach.
This program blends education with guided exercise, helping you better understand your condition while actively improving how your joints function. It is not about temporary relief. It is about building strength, confidence, and long-term movement habits that support your everyday life.
Success Stories
What Is the GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program?
The GLA:D™ program is an evidence-based initiative developed in Denmark and now widely used across Canada. It is designed for individuals with hip or knee osteoarthritis and provides a clear, structured path toward managing symptoms through education and exercise.
Osteoarthritis affects millions of Canadians and is one of the highest contributors to global disability. While it is often associated with aging, many younger adults also experience its effects. Stiffness, discomfort, and reduced function can impact everything from walking and climbing stairs to participating in recreational activities.
Clinical guidelines consistently recommend education and exercise as the first line of care. The GLA:D™ program brings these recommendations together into a format that is practical, supportive, and results-driven.
The GLA: D™ program has been shown to reduce pain and the need for pain medication, improve quality of life, and decrease sick leave taken. It also supports increased physical activity levels and may help delay the need for surgical intervention.
How Does Our GLA:D™ Program Work?
At Cambridge Physiotherapy & Rehab Center, the GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program follows a carefully structured format that ensures consistency and measurable progress.
The program begins with an initial physiotherapy assessment. This step is essential in determining whether the program is the right fit for you. During this assessment, a registered physiotherapist with GLA:D™ Canada certification evaluates your symptoms, mobility, and overall function. This ensures you start the program with a clear understanding of your current condition.
Once accepted into the program, you will attend two education sessions, each lasting approximately 60 minutes. These sessions are designed to help you better understand osteoarthritis, how it affects your joints, and how exercise plays a role in managing symptoms. You will also gain practical strategies for handling daily activities with greater ease.
The exercise portion of the program includes 12 group sessions delivered over six weeks. These sessions take place twice per week and are approximately 60 minutes long. Each session is guided by a physiotherapist with GLA:D™ Canada certification and follows a progressive format, meaning the exercises are adjusted as your strength and mobility improve.
Attendance is mandatory for all sessions, as consistency is key to achieving the best possible results. The structured schedule helps build routine, accountability, and steady progress throughout the program.
Who is the GLA:D™ Canada program for?
The GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program is intended for individuals experiencing mild to severe symptoms of osteoarthritis in the hip or knee joints.
Common concerns that may benefit from this program include:
- Ongoing joint pain during movement
- Stiffness after periods of rest or inactivity
- Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods
- Reduced flexibility or range of motion in the hip or knee
- Joint discomfort that interferes with daily routines
You do not need imaging, such as X-rays, to participate. Eligibility is determined through a clinical assessment, making it easier to begin without unnecessary delays.
The program is suitable for a wide range of individuals, from those with early symptoms to those experiencing more advanced joint changes.
What Are the Possible Benefits of the GLA:D™ Program?
Participating in the GLA:D™ Canada Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis Program offers a range of benefits that support both immediate and long-term improvements.
One of the most noticeable changes is a reduction in joint pain. As strength improves and movement becomes more efficient, stress on the joints is reduced, leading to greater comfort during daily activities.
Improved muscle strength plays a key role in supporting the joints. Stronger muscles help stabilize movement, making tasks like walking or climbing stairs feel more manageable.
Another important benefit is increased confidence. Understanding your condition and knowing how to manage it through exercise can shift your mindset from avoidance to active participation.
The structured nature of the program also encourages consistency. Attending all sessions helps build habits that can be maintained beyond the six-week program, supporting ongoing joint health.
In some cases, maintaining strength and mobility through this approach may help delay the need for more invasive treatments.
