What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a complex spinal condition characterized by a sideways curvature of the spine, often accompanied by rotation of the vertebrae. This condition can appear at any age, though it’s most commonly diagnosed in children and adolescents. A curve of more than 10 degrees qualifies as scoliosis, and if left untreated, it can progress, leading to pain, reduced mobility, and long-term complications.

For years, the “wait and see” approach was the norm. This often involved monitoring the curve until it worsened, at which point the pain worsened and / or surgery became necessary. However, modern research shows that early intervention through methods like the Schroth Method can slow curve progression and, in some cases, reverse mild deformities.

Our Scoliosis Treatment Approach

At Cambridge Physiotherapy & Rehab Center, we prioritize proactive, evidence-based care for scoliosis. Our expert physiotherapists use the renowned Schroth Method, a non-invasive, three-dimensional treatment approach tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re dealing with a mild curve or more advanced scoliosis, we’re here to help.

The Schroth Method Explained

The Schroth Method is a specialized physiotherapy program designed to:

  • Stabilize the spine by addressing three-dimensional imbalances.
  • Strengthen the muscles supporting the spine.
  • Improve posture and balance during daily activities.
  • Expand breathing capacity and lung function.
  • Minimize or eliminate neck & back pain associated with scoliosis.

This technique is customized for each patient based on their curvature type, Cobb angle (measured from X-rays), and physical condition. By integrating targeted exercises and posture education, the Schroth Method provides sustainable improvements.

The Benefits of Our Scoliosis Program

Prevent Curve Progression: Reduce or stop scoliosis from worsening with consistent, targeted therapy.

Avoid Invasive Procedures: Non-invasive physiotherapy can minimize the need for bracing or surgery.

Pain Relief: Alleviate pain and stiffness caused by scoliosis with customized exercises.

Improve Posture and Mobility: Rebalance your spine and strengthen muscles for better posture and movement.

oost Confidence and Quality of Life: Feel empowered and regain control over your body through education and therapy.

Scoliosis Treatment Guelph FAQs

Common signs of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, a tilted head, an asymmetrical waist, or a noticeable prominence on one side of the back when bending forward. Sometimes scoliosis may cause discomfort, but it can also remain symptom-free, especially in its early stages. A professional diagnosis typically involves a physical exam and imaging, like X-rays, to determine the degree of spinal curvature. If you suspect scoliosis, a visit to the Family Physician or a Specialist will help with further examination and/or diagnosis.

Scoliosis physiotherapy is designed to be safe and non-invasive, with minimal discomfort. Some individuals may experience mild soreness as they engage underused muscles, but this is a normal and temporary part of the process. The Schroth Method and other techniques emphasize gentle, controlled movements to improve spinal alignment and strengthen supporting muscles without causing strain. Your physiotherapist will closely monitor your progress and adjust exercises to ensure they remain comfortable and effective. Open communication is key—if something feels uncomfortable, it can be modified to suit your needs.
